The northern area of Pakistan experienced floods. Intense monsoon rains caused these floods in Pakistan. The area most affected by these floods includes Gilgit Baltistan (GB ) or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ( KPK ).

It destroys the homes, mountains ecosystem, remote communities, and precious tourism destinations like Swat, Hunza, Skardu, and Kohistan of northern Pakistan.

The main cause of floods in northern areas of Pakistan is monsoon rain or overflow of water. During the summer, heavy rainfall occurs in northern areas. Pakistan has faced many monsoon rains, but in 2025, above-average rainfall fell in a short period, which may cause flooding. Heavy rain in the mountains, flooded rivers, and natural sewage systems in the north of Pakistan.

Narrow valleys and steep environment in northern areas make the area prone to flash floods. As a result of global warming, glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate. Glacial lakes exploded and released millions of gallons of water within a minute, causing some floods. Rain-soaked hillsides become unsteady, causing landslides that block dammed rivers and roads.

Cutting down trees also week the natural protection of mountains in the northern area of Pakistan Due to less trees the soil become loose and rainwater runs faster down the hills Streets of valley and hills full up from rain water.This water remains in the streets or in valleys to many days, weeks or a Month This causes the flood and landslides in north of the Pakistan.

Flood 2022

2022 flood in northern Pakistan was very distractive This flood effect the Gilgit Baltistan Swat, Chitral, Dile Kohistan and some parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Northern area of Pakistan were faced the heavy rains, melting glaciers and change of climate This combined to cause deadly flood that affected thousand of people lives and destroy their homes in the north area of Pakistan.

Flood 2023

2023 flood affected from 17 March to 15 July  in northern Pakistan This flood was triggered due to heavy monsoon rains, melting glaciers and landslides This flood affected the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan Over 159 lives dead across Pakistan, 264 people injured, and at least 133 died due to weather climate Many crops and livestock were damaged This flood followed the devastating flood of 2022.

Flood 2024

2024 flood were a serious natural disaster This flood begins from July and ended in August The main cause of this flood was heavy monsoon rains and melting glaciers The region affected due to this flood was Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ( KP ) and Gilgit Baltistan ( GB ) 150+ homes were destroyed ( 73 fully destroyed and 77 partially ) This flood also damaged the roads, bridges, farms and livestock

Flood 2025

2025 flood in north area of Pakistan was triggered due to the heavy pre-monsoon rain, flash floods and water rainfall This flood came in June and ends in July 2025 This flood affect the the areas like Sawat, Chitra, Hunza, Darkut and Mansehra It affects the 200+ lives nationwide and 560 people were injured This flood also affected on 16 family members in Swat River that was a big loose

In June 2025 very heavy rain triggered a glacial lake burst in the Arkari valley. The water if flood washed away the road that was connect to villages damaged wheat and fruit and vegetable crops In April 2025, flash flood were caused due to a thunderstorm in ChitralValley. This flood blocked the main Chitral road, destroyed three houses and affect on families lives.

Gilgit Baltistan Flood

Gilgit Baltistan flood happened due to extremely high temperature, rapid rainfall and intense monsoon rains which caused a high melt of glaciers. This flood affected the Burundubar stream, Gilgit Ghize, Nagar, Attabad, and Hunza. This flood affected 72+ lives and injured 130+ people. Gilgit flood also damaged the homes, bridge, roads, farms, and electricity.

KP flood News was weather alerts and flash floods In 2025,  between 25, June to 5, July the Provincial Disaster Management System ( PDMS ) warned of heavy rain, urban flooding, flash floods and landslides across over two districts includes Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa At 30 June PDMA reported 22 deaths and 11 injured due to flash floods and landslides, 86 houses affected.

From May to July 2025, the weather in Hunza was very hot, which caused glaciers to melt quickly. It led to Glacial Lake Outburst Flood. Or in May, a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood from Shishper glacier swept through Hassanabad village in Hunza, destroying hydropower projects and damaging the Pipelines.

In May 2025, heavy rain, snow, and hail caused flash floods that led to the Dir floods. It sends water rushing into homes, roads, and shops along the Panjkora River. This flood blocked the roads, damaged farms, and disrupted travel in the northern area.

Flood in Swat River 2025

On 27, June 2025, sudden heavy monsoon rain caused the dangerous Swat River’s flow around about 6,700 to nearly 78,000 volume flow with in an hour.

This waterflow led to severe flash flooding for tourists along the riverbank The river quickly rose, trapping al tourists that were picnicking near the river At least 17 tourists swept in the river and died due to Swat valley flood.
